Obituary

Mabel (Bitzas) Demis, 90, formerly of Worcester and Framingham, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. She is reunited with her late husband, Paul Demis, who passed in July 2023, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage. She leaves behind her son, Chris Demis and his wife, Susanne, of Watertown, and her daughter Catherine “Tina” Gill of Wilmington, NC; four cherished grandchildren, Byrd and Christian Demis and Matthew and Harrison Gill; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Thomas and Theodore Bitzas.

The daughter of George and Penelope (Mastakas) Bitzas, Mabel spent her early years in the village where she was born, Aghia Marina, loannina, Greece, before emigrating to Worcester in 1947 at the age of twelve. She was a longtime member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and its Ladies Philoptochos Society, where she formed many lifelong friendships.

Mabel was an exceptional woman who is fondly remembered for her tireless work ethic, generous spirit, and devotion to her family. Despite her dedication to hard work, she always made time to entertain and be with her family, with whom she instilled a deep love for cooking and entertaining. She delighted in travel, shopping, hosting friends and family, and never passed up a trip to the casino. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to all of her caretakers for the compassion, kindness and comfort they provided during her final years.

Her funeral will be held Saturday, January 24th, with a service at 10:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at St. Spryidon Cathedral.
