William T. "Matches" McGrath, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at The Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was 93 years of age.
Matches was born in Everett on February 18, 1932, a son of the late John E. McGrath and Catherine B. (Connors) McGrath. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated throughout the Boston Public School system. Matches worked on the Boston waterfront as a Longshoreman at an early age before joining the Teamsters Union Local # 25. He worked his entire career with the Teamsters on the movies and theater crew and was a close ally with Teamsters Union Local # 11. He was a loyal member and known for his dedication to the Teamsters Union Local # 25 where he worked for over 60 years.
In his spare time, Matches enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and Steve Harvey on Family Feud. He also enjoyed traveling to Gloucester to spend time at the ocean and visiting the Causeway Restaurant.
Matches is the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Reardon) McGrath. He is the devoted father of Tom McGrath and his wife Pam and the late Shawna McGrath, Patricia McNeil, Paula Tirro, Joanne Coleman and Charles Libby. He is the loving Grandfather to 11 grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of the late Robert "Jack" McGrath, Michael "Butchie" McGrath, Francis "Footer" McGrath, John McGrath and Mary Plona. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Matches visiting hours on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 4P.M. to 7 P.M. with his Funeral Service at 6:30 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. His burial will be private.
