Obituary

Andrew Joseph Pereira (Andy) passed peacefully on Dec. 31 covered in the blanket of his beloved New England Patriots. He was the son of the late Maria Luiza (“Louise” Cabral) and Antero “Andrew” Joseph Pereira and is predeceased by his brother Donald Pereira and his spouse of 71 years, Anna (DeYeso). He leaves his 5 children: Andrea of Shrewsbury MA (Paul Dobner), Donald (Lyn Bergquist) of Afton MN, Andrew Pereira Jr of Shrewsbury MA, Lisa Woo Kee of El Paso TX and Mark (Anita Sukur) of Minneapolis MN. He also leaves his 8 grandchildren: Julia (Christian Haase), Sofia (Derek Mullaney), Esteban, Lee, Grace, Leo, Rose and Stefan.

Andrew was born in Woburn, Massachusetts to immigrant parents who believed in and lived the American Dream. Andrew was a true member of that demographic we now refer to as “The Greatest Generation”. This was evinced in his lifelong belief that hard work leads to success, frugal saving is important, and one should respect authority.

Andrew was strong academically and graduated from the top of his class at Everett High School. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the US Army and served during the occupation of Japan. Upon returning to the states, he married his sweetheart, Anna DeYeso and began work for N.E. Tel. and Tel., continuing on through their merger with AT&T. Andrew’s keen attention to, memory of, and recollection of detailed information served him well during his career. Throughout the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, he had a key role in the conversion of many phone systems to electronic switching in various municipalities throughout the state.

He was an excellent provider and allowed his children the freedom to choose careers and academic interests without regard to material gain or the stereotypical gender roles of his generation. Throughout his life, Andrew was a loyal fan to Boston sports teams. He also loved music and concerts, especially by the Abletones and the Black Eagle Jazz Band. Andrew enjoyed traveling within and outside the US with his spouse Anna, and with their close friends Guy and Irene. After retiring, they lived as “snowbirds” and travelled between their homes on Cape Cod and Port Charlotte, FL. for over 25 years. Several years ago, they moved to the Southgate retirement community in Shrewsbury.

The children would like to acknowledge the care and patience shown towards their father by the assisted living staff at Southgate. They also are forever grateful for the exemplary daily care given by Edson da Silva during the last year of Andrew’s life. In addition, they would like to thank Dina Sibley R.N. of the Jewish Healthcare Center for her highly skilled nursing and compassionate hospice care. Donations in Andrew’s name can be sent to help the children in Gaza via “Save the Children”. The funeral service will be private.
