Helen L. (Doherty) Murphy, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. She was 84 years of age.
Helen was born in Boston on January 18, 1941, a daughter of the late William Doherty and Catherine (Logue) Doherty who immigrated from Donegal, Ireland. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended St. Catherine’s Parochial School and graduated from St. Rose High School. Helen worked as a meter maid for the City of Boston for 15 years and was a fixture at the “Red Store” for many years where it was known that you could enter the store and beware of what Helen might say to you. She enjoyed traveling to Donegal, Ireland with family and friends and was never shy of attending a good yard sale or flea market. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her babies and family.
Helen is the beloved wife of the late Cornelius J. “Dodie” Murphy Jr. She is the devoted mother of Bernard “Bernie” Devlin, and Donna Prince and her husband Willy. She is the loving Nana of Aileane Doherty, Cassie Doherty, Will Prince, Hannah Devlin, Sean Devlin, and Great Ge Ge to Tessa Fitzpatrick, Finn Fitzpatrick, and Mackenzie Devlin. She is the dear sister of James “Jimmy” Doherty and his wife Marie, Margaret Drake and her husband Greg, and the late Catherine “Kay” Doig, Mary O’Halloran, Frances Burton, and William Doherty. She is the sister-in-law of Mickey and Janice Murphy and the late Renie Murphy and Jimmy Murphy and his surviving wife Annie. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Helen’s Visiting Hours on Monday, January 5, 2026 from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Her burial will be private.
