Obituary

June (Lois Shanbar Adwin) Jurek, 90 years of age went to her Lord peacefully December 9th.

June was raised in Chelsea and moved to Brockton in the early 1960s, where she spent the rest of her life.

She is primarily known for being the long-time "Problem Solver" columnist for the Brockton Enterprise, however she had many accomplishments and interests during her life.

Her participation in the “Teabag Tax Revolt” in Massachusetts in the late 1960’s sparked her life-long interest in both politics and consumer advocacy. This led to her working in the Consumer Advisory Dept. at Brockton City Hall. It was her experience there combined with her ability to write which set in motion her becoming a columnist for the Enterprise.

She later also became a travel writer, sharing with readers her experiences within the U.S. and abroad in Europe (particularly Scotland) and the Middle East (particularly Israel).

In addition to curiosity regarding other cultures, she was interested in theological concepts. While she was raised and spent the majority of her life as a Jew, she chose later in life to incorporate Christianity as part of her being alongside her Judaic upbringing and dedicated herself to the year-long process to become a Catholic.

Other of her interests included classical movies, classical music, Scrabble, crosswords, and trivia. However, participating in church-related activities, particularly the choir, brought her the most joy later in life.

She is predeceased by her mother, Rachel (Cohen Shanbar) Alickman of Swampscott, her stepfather Benjamin Alickman, her stepsister Phyllis (Alickman) Porcella of Lynnfield, her stepbrother Irwin Alickman of Andover, her stepbrother Alan Alickman of West Roxbury, and her sister Linda (Shanbar) Alickman of Andover.

She leaves behind her children Ellen (Adwin) Coe and her husband Gary Coe, Sr. of Abington, her son Lawrence Adwin and his partner Karen Damiecki of Easton, her sister Maxine (Shanbar) Marshall of Sharon, as well as nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, on Wednesday, December 17th from 4 to 7 PM. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West Street, Brockton, on Thursday, December 18th at 10:30 AM. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
