Dorothy (Skinner) Cushman, 97, of Plympton, MA, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, in Plymouth, MA.
Born in 1928 in Chicago to Del Norton and Ebba (Swanson) Skinner, Dorothy lived a life devoted to family, community, and life-long learning. She graduated from Purdue University in 1949, completing her degree in just three years while actively involved in Greek life. She later earned her master’s degree in teaching from Bridgewater State in 1964.
In her younger years, Dorothy worked alongside her husband, Robert T. Cushman, at the family business, Cushman Bakery. She later pursued her passion for education as a beloved teacher in the Hanson and Whitman school districts, where she inspired generations of students until her retirement in 1989.
Dorothy was an active member of the Plympton First Congregational Church and a woman of many talents and passions. She was always curious about the world around her and an active, generous participant in life. She was an avid reader,
pen pal, gardener, and world traveler, with a deep appreciation for nature and the arts. She enjoyed gathering loved ones around her cooking, and the companionship of the many dogs she cherished throughout her life. Her forward-
thinking and positive outlook, thoughtfulness, and warm hospitality enriched the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Robert (Bruce) Cushman, and Elizabeth C. DiGiorgio and her husband James DiGiorgio; her grandchildren, Lindsey DiGiorgio and Michael DiGiorgio; her great-grandson, Desmond DiGiorgio; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Robert T. Cushman, her siblings Jenette Skinner, Norton Skinner (Rosemary), and Ruth Skinner Halverson (Jim).
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 2:00PM at Colebrook Cemetery in Whitman, MA. Refreshments at Whitman American Legion after.
