Guy Raymond Jones, Jr., 79, of Worcester, a lifelong contributor to Worcester’s arts, culture, and community died Saturday, September 27th in Lanessa Extended Care, Webster. He leaves his sister, Ann DeRiggs; two nieces, Stephanie DeRiggs and Tracy Carter Doughtery; and his grandnephew, Tyler Battle. He was predeceased by a niece, Holly DeRiggs.
He was born in Worcester the son of Guy R. Jones, Sr. and Eva O. (Dubuc) Jones and grew up in Holden, where he was active in the First Baptist Church Youth Group. He graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1964 and went on to earn his degree from New England College in Henniker, NH, where he also played on the college soccer team.
Guy’s professional journey was as eclectic and vibrant as his personality. As a young man, he worked at the Worcester Art Museum, sparking a lifelong passion for the arts. He went on to serve as Executive Director of Come Alive Home for Troubled Youth, dedicating himself to helping young people in need. Later, he became the Executive Director of Foothills Theatre, a position he held for 19 years, where his vision and leadership enriched Worcester’s cultural life.
He was the owner and operator of Acorn Construction, a railroad construction company. Guy had a love of restoration with his creative talents, resources, and vision; he accomplished all he set out to do. A true craftsman, Guy was an avid collector of motorcycles, old cars and antiques; and found joy in restoring classic cars, motorcycles, and furniture.
Deeply committed to his community, Guy was involved in Worcester’s art and theatre scene, conservation efforts across Worcester County, and headed a symphony orchestra in the Metro West area. As a young man Guy worked at Worcester State Hospital, where he cared for those living with mental illness with compassion and dignity.
Music was another of Guy’s passions; he enjoyed playing and listening to folk music. Beyond his many accomplishments, he was best known for his captivating storytelling and his wonderfully eclectic dinner parties, where guests never knew what fascinating new friends they might meet. His ability to easily make friends left him with many friendships that endured for years and spanned the globe.
Guy lived a life full of creativity, generosity, and connection. His warmth, humor, and boundless energy for the arts and community will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
