Verna T. Buote, 103 Dateline: Mansfield, MA Verna T. (Cummings) Buote, age 103, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late Hubert E. “Eddie” Buote, who died on June 25, 2006. Born in Boston, MA on March 15, 1922, she was a loving daughter of the late Joseph V. and Verna Rose (Malloch) Cummings. Verna grew up and was educated in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. Dedicated to her adoring family, she had made her home in Mansfield for the past forty-one years. In recognition of being the oldest resident of the Town of Mansfield, at the time of her death, she was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane Award and recently was driven in Mansfield’s 250th Anniversary Parade. A communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield, Verna faithfully volunteered at the Mansfield Council on Aging and at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul District Council of Attleboro. Verna’s hobbies included crocheting, crafts, oil painting, ceramics, sewing, dancing and singing and will always be remembered for her fashionable nature and appearance. She is survived by her devoted daughter and best friend Verna Rose McLaughlin of Mansfield and her late husband Thomas J. McLaughlin. She was the dear sister of the late Mary E. Miller and her late husband John Miller, Josephine Helmboldt and her late husband Albert Helmboldt, Rita Tully, Margaret R. Ross and her late husband William Ross, former East Boston Firefighter Frederick “Jim” Cummings and his late wife Esther Cummings and Joseph E. Cummings. She is also survived by several generations of loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, September 8th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield. Her funeral will begin on Tuesday, September 9th at 10:00 A.M. from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
