Obituary

Carol Lessard of Brockton, known simply as “Nana” to so many, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 31st. She was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Tamulevich) DeCosta of Brockton, and was predeceased by her brothers Robert (Bobby), Richard (Dicky) and William Jr. (Sonny) Decosta. She is survived by her four children and their families whom she loved endlessly - Richard Townsend (Hickory, NC), Robyn Leate (New Bedford, MA), Michael Leate (Brockton, MA) and Terri Leate-Reardon (Brockton, MA). She doted on both of her grandchildren until the very end - Kenneth Leate (Sharon, MA) and Hope (Reardon) Cayouette (Providence, RI) as well as her Great-Granddaughter, Vanna Cayouette (Providence, RI), who stole her heart despite their time together being too brief. She also leaves behind lots of cousins, nieces and nephews who she adored, as well as countless friends who became family along the years.

Carol loved her community of Brockton, and worked for the City as a cafeteria worker in many of the schools. She never missed an opportunity to get involved with the Union and Cafeteria Workers Federation. She later got involved in the tenant’s association at Belair Heights (former President). She loved advocating and standing up for what she believed in, and ensured her voice was always heard to help others. She befriended so many people from all walks of life, and offered the same kindness and compassion to all. In her downtime - she enjoyed getting lost in a good book or detective show, going to the casino, traveling, couponing, attending conferences and sharing a good meal with family or friends. Self-described as a “free spirit” - Carol never let any of the many adversities she faced in her 85 years of life hold her back from living her life to the fullest, fighting for others until the very end and being unapologetically herself every step of the way.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025 at Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, from 9-11am followed by a Funeral Home Service at 11am. Her burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
