Obituary

Melvin E. Maitland, 78, of Douglas, Georgia, died Monday, August 25, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

Graveside services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Lax Holiness Baptist Church Cemetery in Coffee County, Georgia, with the Rev. Joe Taft officiating.

Mr. Maitland was born April 6, 1947, in Petersburg, Virginia, to the late Henry & Dorothy Stevenson Maitland. He grew up in Savannah and was an avid bowler. He was a graduate of H.V. Jenkins High School and attended South Georgia College in Douglas, where he played on the baseball team. He was drafted from college and served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Maitland was a beloved school bus driver for the Coffee County Board of Education and loved attending football games and field trips. He made a lasting impression on everyone he met and will be remembered for his sense of humor. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Willacoochee as well as a Mason and Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Maitland of Douglas; children: Doug Maitland of Lax and Amy Williamson of Lax; step-children: Angie Ragsdale and Brian Phillips; and grandchildren: Haley Maitland & Charles North, Alyssa Maitland, Dustin Williamson, and Torie Jones.

Paulk Funeral Home, Ocilla, is in charge of arrangements.
