Obituary

Francis Patrick “Binnie” O’Leary, 92, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on August 23rd. He was born in Worcester, the son of Patrick J. O’Leary and Mary Ann (Dowd) O’Leary. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Ann O’Leary.

Binnie leaves four sons: Paul and Kathleen (Bowler) O'Leary of Spencer, Patrick O'Leary of Newport, RI, Stephen and Audrey (Rivernider) O'Leary of Woodstock, CT, and John and Michelle (Guertin) O'Leary of Millbury. He is survived by 11 grandchildren: Sean O’Leary, Daniel O’Leary, Katelyn Greenwood, Meghan O’Leary, Brendan O’Leary, Cadence O’Leary, Nathan O’Leary, Erin Sarkisian, Katherine O’Leary, Thomas O’Leary and Patrick O’Leary. He also leaves 8 great-grandchildren. Binnie is survived by his sister Patricia and brother Paul and was predeceased by his brother John and sister Ellen.

After graduating from St. John’s High School, Binnie enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga during the Korean War. When attending Worcester State Teachers College, he met the love of his life, Patricia. They were married for 60 years before her passing in 2021. Upon graduating from college, Binnie embarked on a long teaching career in the Worcester public schools. He was well loved as a teacher and also coached football, basketball and golf. In addition to teaching and coaching, Binnie worked as a truck driver after school and on weekends.

Binnie played golf in the little free time that he had and enjoyed playing with the Main South group and The Growlers at Hillcrest Country Club in Leicester. Binnie was a member of the Main South American Legion Post. He was a fan of New England sports, the PGA and horse racing. But nothing made Binnie happier than spending time with his four boys, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved his annual vacations with family at Hampton Beach, NH and Wells Beach, ME. Binnie was undefeated in driveway basketball games of HORSE.

His funeral is Thursday, August 28th from Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. at the church. Please omit flowers, the family requests donations in Binnie’s name to St. John’s Food for the Poor Program at St. Francis Xavier Center.
