STEEP FALLS - Guy “Skip” W. Plummer, Jr., age 81, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025, after a brief illness.
Born in Portland, Maine, a son of the late Guy and Winifred (Marean) Plummer, Sr, on December 17, 1943. He got the nickname “Skip” as his father was in the Navy during WW II and would write home asking how “the little skipper” was doing and the nickname stuck. Skip was predeceased by his younger brother, William “Bill” Plummer and by an infant daughter.
Skip had many, many cousins and spent many years of his youth surrounded by family, forming close bonds that stayed strong throughout his life. While his father was deployed, Skip and his mother lived with his Grammie Plummer, and he had a very close relationship with her.
After graduating from Hollis High School, Skip attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (SMVTI, now SMCC) and graduated with an Associates’ Degree in 1964.
In March of 1965, Skip married the love of his life, Jean Decker Plummer, and they raised their family in Standish, until the summer of 1990, when a change in his machining career, moved him to Plymouth, Maine where Skip & Jean resided until returning to Standish in 2023.
Skip had an incredible work ethic and was well respected by many people he worked with in the machining industry throughout his lengthy career. He worked for over 25 years at Rich Tool & Die Co in South Windham. He also worked for many years at Mid-state Machine in Winslow. Not one to really think about retiring, Skip then worked, right up until his passing, for ARCH Cutting Tools in Cornish. His knowledge and skill was sought after by many, including being tapped by G.E. in the 1980’s to create a special part for the stealth jet bombers. G.E. had looked everywhere for what they wanted and Skip was the one who was able to design and produce it.
Skip was past President of the Buxton-Hollis Jaycees, a member of the U.C.C. church in Standish, and attended the United Methodist Church in Newport.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and some of the best memories for his family are times spent hunting or fishing with him. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling to upstate New York and going salmon fishing.
He had a love of guns, reloading, rebuilding guns and did gun work for people all over the state. He was also a member of the International Benchrest Shooters and did competitive shooting for many years, winning multiple competitions. He did several of these competitions with his brother, Bill and they shared a love for the sport and the competition.
He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason and was a 60-year member of the Buxton Masonic Lodge #115, as well as being a member of the Kora Temple. He was also a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star including Dawn of Hope Chapter #106 in Standish, and Nokomis Chapter #42 in Newport. He was a very strong supporter of the Masonic youth organizations as both his son and daughter were active members of DeMolay International and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. “Dad Plummer” holds a special place in the hearts of many Rainbow Girls all over Maine.
Skip had many interests over the years, including photography, hunting, fishing (especially fly fishing and tying his own flies), the competitive shooting matches, bowling, reading, playing video games (racing and flight simulator games being his favorites), and racing. He spent several years racing at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough and would often be found working on his race car out in the garage with one of his best friends, Buddy Nevells. His love of racing never left and he enjoyed watching the races on tv, and later on in life, he and Jean bought a camper and traveled to watch several Nascar races, including Bristol and many trips to Loudon. These trips became special memories for his grown children and granddaughters who often joined them on these adventures.
He also had a love for reading – historical non-fiction and science fiction were some of his favorites, which also showed in some of his favorite movies and tv shows. He was a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan. He especially loved history and visited Gettysburg multiple times.
Skip loved music, particularly the classic country of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Hank Williams Jr. He and Jean enjoyed attending the Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Festival in Sidney for many summers.
Skip is survived by his beloved wife, Jean (Decker) Plummer; his son, Guy W. (Bill) Plummer III of Steep Falls; his daughter Jennifer and partner Daniel MacCabe of Etna; sister: Jacqueline E. Norton of Abita Springs, Louisiana; granddaughters: Kaitlin and her husband Hunter Glidden of Carmel, Maine; Lauren and her husband Kristian Casavant of Bradford, Maine; Jackie Plummer of Steep Falls, Isabelle Chartier of Limerick and Mattie Chartier of Hollis; great-grandchildren: Marley of Carmel, Willow of Limerick and Jamison of Hollis. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jeanette Decker; sister-in-law Donna Morris and husband Van, brother-in-law Douglas Pollock and wife Priscille, as well as many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. His family meant the world to him and his grandchildren were, for certain, the absolute light of his life. He was the greatest Poppa to all his granddaughters and never missed an opportunity to have a bowl of ice cream or some spicy Doritos or beef jerky with them. Being a grandfather brought out a softer, sentimental side of Skip and he was convinced the sun rose and set around them.
A funeral and Masonic service will be held on Saturday, September 13th at 2 PM at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road, Buxton. Burial will follow at Dow’s Corner Cemetery in Standish. Online condolence messages can be submitted at www.mainefuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
