Celestine M. (Fitzsimmons) “Sally” Gookin, age 100, most recently of Franklin, formerly of Norton and Mansfield, passed away comfortably at home, surrounded by her loving and caring family on Thursday, August 14, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late John A. Gookin, Sr. to whom she was wed for sixty years at the time of his death on April 17, 2004.
Born in Boston, MA on June 6, 1925, she was a loving daughter of the late Edward J. and Julia V. (Coveney) Fitzsimmons.
A 1943 graduate of Dedham High School, Sally made her home in Mansfield for many years where she raised her family and was a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church. Mrs. Gookin worked till the age of 90, retiring as an office worker at CPS in Norton. She had previously been employed at the former Mansfield Bank, Advanced Materials Solutions and at Sannie’s, a former landmark in downtown Mansfield.
Sally wholeheartedly loved her family dearly and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She had a special place in her heart for dogs and enjoyed watching and feeding the beautiful birds that frequented her yard. Sally was also an avid bridge player, enjoyed trips to Foxwoods Casino and at the time of her death, was anticipating the birth of her 5th and 6th great-great grandchildren.
She was the devoted mother of Denise G. Cassidy and her husband Paul of Attleboro, Ellen Griffin and her husband Edward of Hyannis, Karen Warchol and her husband Fred of Attleboro, Diane M. Durant and her husband George of Middleboro, Lisa M. Connor and her husband Chris of Port Charlotte, FL, Mary Gookin of Hudson Valley, NY, John A. Gookin, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Franklin and the late Suzanne M. Gookin. She was the treasured and proud grandmother of Stephen, Kelly, Eddie, Michael, Amy, Paul, James, Danny, Caroline, Matthew, Salong, Jason, Suzanne, Nicky, Jarrod, Julie, Joey, Nathan, Brian, David, Stevie, Jacob and the late Chris, the great grandmother of Ashley, C.J., Rachel, Dylan, Nolan, Ozzy, Elyana, Analia, Jaxson, Ella, Max, Leo, Abram, Kim, Will, Ally, Benjamin, Zachary, Hannah, Joshua, Brooklyn, Reagan, Easton, Laxton and Isla and the great-great grandmother of Kaiden, Christopher, Kodi and Kinsley. She was the dear sister of the late Marie McFadden, Paul Fitzsimmons, Frederic Fitzsimmons, Richard Fitzsimmons and Joan Stinson. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, August 18th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 19th at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
