Carmel F. Doherty
8/6/2025

Carmel F. (Keating) Doherty of Bedford MA, formerly of Burlington MA, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 87 years old.

Carmel was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, and was forever a proud Aussie. She trained as a surgical nurse at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney and early in her nursing career, had the opportunity to travel to the US and work with renowned cardiac surgeons at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. What was meant to be a short stay in the States turned into a lifetime after meeting and marrying her husband Bob, and having 4 daughters who she then devoted her life to. Later in life, once her girls were grown, she had a second career teaching in the EMT and Paramedic programs at Northeastern University and was integral in the establishment of an EMT program in Dublin, Ireland.

Having left her family behind, Carmel quickly integrated into her new American family, becoming best friends with her sisters-in-law and lovingly caring for both her mother and father-in-law as they aged - she was always the caretaker. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and cherished her grandchildren more than anything else. They became her life and they equally adored her.

Carmel was an avid reader and had a passion for traveling. She was always ready for an adventure and often accompanied her daughters on trips around the US and abroad. She had a sharp intellect and a quick wit, was compassionate and kind, always putting others' needs ahead of her own. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband Robert P. Doherty, and her 4 loving children: Melissa Dunford and her husband Jeffrey of Ipswich, MA, Nicole Bonica and her husband Matthew of Dover, MA, Kristen McEachern and her husband Kevin of Bedford, MA, and Rebecca Borden of Nashua, NH. She was the loving "Mimi" to Aiden, Stephanie, Anna, Grace, Addison, Connor, Elise, and Shane. She is also survived by her cherished brother Micheal Keating and his late wife Lyn of Queensland, Australia, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Monday, August 11th, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again Tuesday morning, August 12th, at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 12 p.m. Interment services will be private. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carmel's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
