Norman L. Hirst, 88
Buxton – Norman L. Hirst, age 88, beloved husband of Barbara Hirst and proud U.S. Coast Guard veteran, passed away peacefully at Kennebunk Rehabilitation on August 2, 2025.
He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1956, where he was a standout athlete and a proud member of the state championship football teams in both 1955 and 1956. As an All-State fullback, Norman played with determination, strength, and team spirit. It was also during these formative years that he met his high school sweetheart, Barbara — a love that grew into a lifelong partnership.
Born with an adventurous spirit and a tireless work ethic, Norman was the ultimate DIY enthusiast. He could fix or build just about anything — from repairing riding lawnmowers and restoring antique furniture to constructing an impressive three-story A-frame camp in the 1970s, a cherished family retreat still used today. He approached every project with ingenuity and determination.
He retired in 1990 from W.H. Nichols after 17 years of dedicated service, bringing the same diligence and craftsmanship to his professional life that he did to everything he touched. In retirement, he and Barbara embraced the open road, spending several summers in Alaska following the salmon runs in their RV — memories they treasured deeply.
A true outdoorsman, Norman found joy in fishing, hunting, beekeeping, gardening, and riding motorcycles. Fishing held a special place in his heart. Whether casting from the shore of a quiet lake or standing waist-deep in a rushing stream, Norman displayed remarkable patience and precision. He especially loved tying his own flies, a meticulous process that combined his keen eye for detail with his appreciation for the art of angling. Each fly was a small masterpiece, crafted with care and used with pride. His passion for fishing wasn’t just about the catch — it was about the experience, the stillness, and the connection to nature.
Norman leaves behind his devoted wife Barbara, three children — William, Michael, and Nancy — and five grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of curiosity, craftsmanship, and love of the natural world.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14th from 10 AM to 11 AM, followed by an 11 AM memorial service at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. Burial will be at a later date at South Buxton Cemetery.
