Obituary

A. Imelda "Mel" (Ducey)(Applegate) Fitzgerald, a resident of Charlestown, Melrose and Woburn, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years of age.

Mel was born in Boston on April 27, 1930, a daughter of the late Leo Ducey and Mary (Hickey) Ducey. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from St. John's High School in Cambridge. She was a homemaker throughout her life, dedicated to her beloved family. She loved to travel and was devoted to her faith by being a proud member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church Women's Guild and teaching CCD.

Mel is the beloved wife of the late Joseph Fitzgerald and Boston Police Officer Lawrence Applegate. She is the devoted mother of retired Burlington Police Officer Richard Applegate and his wife Lauren, retired Boston Police Officer Larry Applegate and his wife Joan, retired Melrose Police Officer James Applegate and his wife Wendy, Mary Applegate, Kathy Rogers and her husband John, Ellen Fiore and her husband John, Michael Applegate and his wife Janet, Theresa Applegate-Foschio and her husband John, and the late Stephen Applegate, Diane Applegate, and Denise Applegate. She is the stepmother of Ann Seitsinger, Irene McHugh, and Joseph Fitzgerald. She is the loving Mel-Mel to 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is the dear sister of the late Helen Reilly, Margaret "Peg" Canney, Kay Lynch, May Sullivan, Dottie Monaco, retired Boston Police Officer Leo "Bud" Ducey Jr, and Rev. William Ducey, SSJC.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mel's Funeral on Thursday July 24, 2025 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown, followed by her Funeral Mass at 10 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Her burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Her visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 from 4 PM to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
