William M. "Bill" Carbone
5/12/2025

Of Wakefield, formerly of Somerville on May 12, 2025. Bill was born in Cambridge and raised in East Cambridge. He was the son of the late Anthony and Margaret Carbone. Bill met Marilyn Scutellaro and they were married in 1960, and moved to Somerville to raise their three children. In their early years, they struggled to raise a family, but insisted that Marilyn stay at home to raise the children.

Bill worked multiple jobs to eventually buy his own home in Somerville in 1967. Bill would insist that his wife Marilyn go to Bingo weekly and take an occasional trip to Las Vegas with her sisters and girlfriends even with money still tight.

In 1960, when Bill and Marilyn first got married they rented an apartment on Whitman Street in Somerville. It was there across the street they met the Campbell Family. Danny and Barbara Campbell had 4 children, twins, Robert and Richard, Ronny and Danny as well as Barbara’s sister Vivian and brother Joe Talbot. The two family’s parents immediately became best of friends and their children became close friends as well all attending elementary, junior and high school. In 1975, Danny Campbell, their father, died of cancer at a young age leaving his wife, Barbara to raise 4 young boys. Bill stepped up and immediately helped to become an acting father to the Campbell family. He would spend time with the Campbell, boys playing and watching their sports and in later years accompany them to the horse track and play cards. Both families continue to have a close relationship to this day.

In 1994, they sold their home in Somerville and moved to Wakefield. Bill and Marilyn lived a simple life making many sacrifices to provide for his family and home. They would spend their time together watching movies, playing cards, and going out dancing with family and friends.

At the age of 18, Bill went to work in the shipping and receiving department at Polaroid in Cambridge. Bill made lots of friends there and would often times walk to the nearby MIT University cafeteria to have lunch and chat with students and facility. Bill retired from Polaroid at the age of 60, working there 42 years. At the time of his retirement, he had served as Polaroid’s fifth longest serving employee. He would often joke that he became so smart because he also went to MIT for 42 years as well.

Bill loved all Boston’s sports teams, but his true love was the Boston Red Sox. His favorite player was Ted Williams. Bill idolized Williams, and as a young boy, knowing that on Red Sox home games Williams would stay at the Old Hotel Biltmore in Kenmore Square, he would wait for Williams to leave the hotel to walk to nearby Fenway Park. Bill would walk with the reporters, listen and see the reporters pressing Williams with questions. On one such day Williams yelled out, “will you reporters get the hell out of here and leave me alone.” Then Williams turned around to Bill and said, “Hey you kid, don’t think I don’t know that you follow me to every home game.” Bill watched and saw many great past and present baseball players, but always said that Ted Williams was the greatest ever.

Bill loved amateur sports as well and would attend all of Somerville’s major parks, Trum, Dilboy, Ross, Glenn, Lincoln, etc. to watch men’s baseball, basketball, softball and flag football.

In his later years he loved to watch all his grandchildren play sports baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer. Always juggling his time and days to see them all play, brought him great joy. Bill was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, coworker and most importantly a friend to all. He will be sadly missed.

Bill was the beloved husband to Marilyn R. Carbone (Scutellaro). Devoted father of Maureen O’Brien and her husband Mark of Wakefield, Anthony Carbone and his wife Paula of Stoneham and James Carbone of Newport News, VA. He was the adored grandfather of Mark, Billy, Jamie, Anthony, Tyler, Michael, Devin and Kyle and loving great-grandfather of Riley and Liam. Bill was the dear brother of Carol Mahoney of Somerville and the late Walter Carbone, Agnes Dattero and James Carbone. Bill was the loving uncle all his nieces and nephews who he adored as well and was always concerned about their wellbeing and future. As they got older, he consistently inquired about their families as well.
