Obituary

Velma Lawson, born on July 6, 1937, in Kingston, North Carolina, ascended to her eternal home on April 21, 2025, in Whitman, Massachusetts, surrounded by her beloved daughter and son-in-law. She was the cherished daughter of James O’Ward and Bertha McDaniel.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Lowanda, and son-in-law, William. She is forever celebrated by her grandchildren—Nick, Nichole, Will, Shelly, and Candace—as well as her great-grandchildren, Arianna, Janessa, Julian, and Isaac. Additionally, she leaves behind her surviving sister, Minnie, and her late sisters, Vivian and Dorothy, along with her brother, the late James.

A devoted woman of God, Velma was a nurturing mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and treasured family member to many. Although her physical presence may no longer grace our lives, her indomitable spirit will continue to guide and inspire us every day. May her cherished memory uplift us in all that we do, and may her radiant light forever shine brightly in our hearts.

Velma was raised on a farm, surrounded by her family. As a young child, she delighted in wandering through the fields, playing with goats and chickens, and spending ample time with her beloved dog. One of her fondest memories from her youth was the ritual of dinner preparation. She and her mother would venture into the garden to gather everything they needed to create a wholesome meal.

In the 1940s, Velma relocated to Boston, where she embarked on her professional journey. Her first job was at a laundromat before she began her remarkable career at Raytheon in the late 1950s. It was during this time that she welcomed her first and only child, her daughter, Lowanda.

Velma was a remarkable woman of faith who had a passion for fashion, hairstyling, socializing, and cooking. She embraced family life wholeheartedly and played a vital role in the upbringing of her grandchildren. Her legacy of love and devotion will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew her.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Lung Association.
