Bill Hains
Louis William “Bill” Hains passed peacefully with family at his home on January 16th, 2023.
He was born on January 18th, 1934 to John and Mary Clymer Hains in Connersville IN. From a young age, he learned how to work hard and contribute to the household. Bill graduated from Anderson High School in 1951. Afterward graduation, he travelled to the west coast and tried a variety of ventures. When he returned home to Indiana he met his wife Margaret while playing cards at his Aunt and Uncles home. They married on August 4th, 1956 at the Baptist Church in Elwood. They moved to Fort Campbell KY where he served his country in the United States Army 101st Airborne from 1956 – 1958.
Bill and Margaret founded MoFab Inc. in 1958. Bill first learned the welding trade from his cousin Gib Mason and began welding in a one car garage. With a lot of hard work and a love for ornamental iron, Modern Fabricating was soon built in the back yard at 24th and Madison. As the business grew to serving any steel and welding needs in the community the shop was moved to 14th and Fairview St. and the name was shortened to MoFab. He built the business on the principles of being honest and doing the job right the first time. Bill and Margaret’s grandsons continue to run the family-owned business and they were proud that MoFab maintains a reputation for quality products and services. The family is happy to say there have been many long term loyal employees and customers.
Bill was a creative entrepreneur. In addition to MoFab, he established Future Fabricating, Cerline Ceramic Corporation, Ornamental Iron and Muncie MoFab Concrete division. He also owned The Three Pigs Restaurant in the early 1980’s. With each endeavor, he maintained a solid work ethic and commitment to family and customers.
Bill was a leader in the Anderson community. He served on the Anderson Board of Works in the 1980’s where his integrity and business experience were appreciated. At that time he met Bob Moffatt who became the best friend a guy could ever have. Bill was a member of Fellowship Masonic Lodge #681, Madison County Shrine Club, Murat Temple, Lions Club, and the Elks Lodge in Anderson. Bill also helped organize The United Cerebral Palsy organization and served as President. He believed in and supported the mission of The Christian Center. He served two terms as President of the Madison County Contractor’s Association and enjoyed organizing the yearly golf tournaments where he was an entertaining MC. Bill was also an early member and served as president of NOMMA (National Ornamental Metal Manufacturers Association) where his accomplishments were recognized with the “Work Horse” award.
Bill and Margaret Hains were a family-oriented couple who loved playing cards, hosting gatherings, going camping or travelling with family and friends. They especially enjoyed boat rides and vacations with Bob and Judy Moffatt. They loved being up at the lakes and eventually bought a cottage on Irish Lake. Later in life, they became “snowbirds” and happily spent the winters in their channel-side home in Port Charlotte, Florida. They made friends in both places by helping neighbors with projects and hosting parties. They worked hard and shared their love and success with many. They always made sure everyone had a great time, which usually included games and laughter into the wee hours.
Most of all, dad provided a wonderful life for his family. He managed to instill a strong work ethic in all of us kids and many others.
Bill is survived by his children; Robert (Sherry) Hains, Lorraine Hains, Max Hains and Bruce (Lydia) Hains; grandchildren, Rob (RaChai) Ewing, Nicole (Laura) Diggle, Hayley Joyell Smith, Tanner Smith, Max Hains II, Mason (Katy Waldrep) Hains, Mark (Allie) Hains; step-grandson, Anthony Smith; great-grandchildren, Corbin (Jasen), Hayden, Haylee, Allyson, Liam, Lincoln, Leon, Axl and Ivy. Bill is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. The family is very appreciative of the love from his care giving angels who helped him to stay in his home. The family also gives heartfelt thanks to Bob Moffatt for his help and devotion.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret (Green) Hains in 2018; parents; siblings, John Hains, Bob Hains, and Norma Gregg; special cousin, Paul Wiand; son-in-law, Brant Smith; daughter-in-law, Sharon Hains; step-grandson, Thomas Smith; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Green family.
Dad will be greatly missed, but knowing he is with mom again gives us great comfort. Wherever the destination, Bill modeled for others to always leave a place better than you found it. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of honest work, generosity and good humor. He was a loyal son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Funeral visitation will be at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service on Saturday January 21st from 10:30 to 1:45. Masonic ceremony at 1:45 and followed immediately by the funeral service. Bill requested that present and past MoFab employees wear a MoFab shirt or uniform for the service. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either The NOMMA Education Foundation or to The Christian Center.
