Obituary

TEWKSBURY        George E. ‘Hoppy’ Grimes, 76 of Tewksbury, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Care One at Wilmington with his family by his side. He was the widower of the late Kathleen (Sears) Grimes, who passed away in 2009 after 40 years of marriage.

He was born in Somerville on September 22, 1946 and was the son of the late John William Grimes and the late Eleanor Catherine (Leard) Grimes. He was raised in Somerville, and called it home until 2001 when he and Kathy moved to Tewksbury.

Hoppy was a devoted hard worker, working seven days a week for most of his life. Over the years he worked as a factory worker at Alb Rubber for many years; as a book-binder in Winchester for about 10 years; and as a handyman at Hanscom Air Force Base for 10 years until his retirement in 2012. He enjoyed baseball and spent a lot of time coaching baseball in Somerville for many years. Although he was a devoted hard worker, he loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.  He loved spending time watching all of his grandchildren in all of their activities from dance to hockey and baseball/softball.

George is survived by his two sons: George L. Grimes and his wife, Stephanie of Billerica, and their son, Matthew and John C. Grimes and his wife, Carissa LoNano of North Andover and his children, Hannah Grimes, and Francesca Grimes; his sisters, Ellie Day and her husband, Bryan of Tewksbury, and Dotti Pestana of Somerville; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was welcomed into heaven by his brothers, the late Robert Grimes and the late John Grimes.

On Saturday, December 17, 2022, all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 9 a.m.-12 noon at Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury, MA 978-851-2061.
