Joseph P. Sweeney, age 74, of Norton, passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, September 4, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary (MacKenzie) Sweeney, to whom he was wed on September 9, 1991.

Born in Boston, MA March 29, 1948, he was a loving son of the late Joseph F. and Mary T. (Silverstrone) Sweeney.

Joe grew up in Needham and was a graduate of Needham High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, was stationed in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on March 7, 1971.

A resident of Norton for almost forty years, Joe worked for many years as an auto body technician and following his retirement, as a carpenter with his brother Steve.

Joe was a member of the Norton VFW. He loved the simple pleasures of relaxing at home and spending time entertaining family. He proudly built the two houses his family lived in, enjoyed remodeling projects around the home and when younger, restoring older and antique cars. He also had a special place in his heart for animals and will be greatly missed by his Golden Retriever “Nala” and his red cat “Matty”.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children: Sean Sweeney and his wife Nicole of Florida and Holly Briggs of Norton. He was the cherished grandfather of Shane, Gavin, Aliyah and Brandon. He was the dear brother of Pamela McGuire of Everett, Maureen Barry of Norton, Judith Cahn of Georgia, Sandra Kaye of Attleboro, Christine Motowidlak of Georgia, Stephen Sweeney of Newton and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, September 11th from 3:00-6:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp Street (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.

A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held on Monday, September 12th at 1:00 P.M. at the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Plain Street, Norton.

In lieu of flowers. Joseph’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 25, Mansfield, MA 02048.
