Nancy M. Galvin
Nancy M. Galvin, age 76, of Canton, formerly of Dorchester passed away June 9th at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Born and raised in the Cedar Grove Section of Dorchester, she has lived in Canton since 1998.
Nancy graduated from Monsignor Ryan High School in Dorchester, her love of teaching led her to Boston State Teacher’s College, where she was awarded a 4 year scholarship, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In her early years as a classroom teacher, Nancy recognized the educational needs were changing. She went back to school and earned her Master’s in Computer Science. Nancy then took on the newly created job of teaching computers to her students and other Educators, which she held until she retired.
As a member of the teacher’s union BTU Local 66, Nancy taught in various elementary schools for over 3 decades, finally retiring from the Lee Elementary School in Dorchester. Nancy had many outside interests including being a volunteer archivist at UMass in Dorchester and she was an avid reader. When family gatherings included competitive games, everyone wanted to be on Nancy’s team….she was wicked smaaht!
Daughter of the late Mary B. (Hally) and Michael L. Galvin. Sister of Ellen M. Galvin of Belmont, Michael L. Galvin Jr., (Ret. BPD) and his wife Theresa of Dorchester, John W. Galvin and his wife Laurie of Norwell, Patricia A. Galvin of Belmont, Linda M. Galvin of Belmont and Maureen E. Galvin of Canton. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews and her rescue dog Travis. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Sunday June 19thfrom 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass at St. Oscar Romero Parish (formerly St. John the Evangelist Church), Canton Monday morning June 20th at 10 am. Burial Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester. In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made in her memory to the Hansen Elementary School 25 Pecunit St. Canton, MA 02021 or to the Canton Animal Shelter 150 Bolivar St. Canton, MA 02021.
