CHICOPEE - Helene T. “Memere” (Roy) Bernard, 78, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Springfield on June 27, 1943, a beloved daughter of the late Delphis J. and Laura M. A. (Chretien) Roy. She was raised in Springfield where she graduated from Cathedral High School. She retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, but continued to help run the family business, the Lil’ Peach on Memorial Drive and the West End Dairy, both in Chicopee. She also kept very busy at the Target in Holyoke working in the fitting room and most especially in the cash office. She was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. Helen was the most caring, loving person you would have met. She was forever putting everyone else’s needs before her own, even to the very end. Her family was always her number one priority. She also loved to travel, play cribbage, and tend to her beautiful flower gardens. Before COVID, she enjoyed spending time with her many friends at the Senior Center in Blunt Park in Springfield. In 2019, she was very proud to have gone skydiving at the adventurous age of 75. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Allen D. “Pepere” Bernard. They were married on September 28, 1963 at the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. She leaves her two loving children, Thomas J. Bernard and his wife, Theresa, of Chicopee and Laura J. Nolan and her husband, Timothy, of Springfield; her five cherished grandchildren, Kyle Bernard and his wife, Michelle, of Ludlow, Trevor Bernard of Baltimore, MD, Paige Bernard and Madison Bernard and her fiancé, Jeff “Fred” Zebrowski, all of Chicopee and Emma Nolan of Springfield; her cherished great granddaughter, Abigail Bernard of Ludlow; her two dear brothers, Paul Roy and his wife, Donna, of Newington, CT, and Richard Roy and his wife, Sandy, of Westfield; her dear sister, Lorraine Babij of Springfield; her dear brother in law, William Wren of Manassas Park, VA; and her numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her dear siblings, Leo Roy and his wife, Blanche, Alice Wren, and Claire Orefice and her husband, Joe; and her dear brother in law, George Babij. Her family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the many nurses, doctors, and support staff who made their mom’s last week of life as comfortable for her as possible. Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 7:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 594 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, June 13, 2022 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
