Obituary

Peter Walker Whelpley
June 14, 1936 – March 15, 2022

KENNEBUNKPORT- Peter W. Whelpley, age 85, formerly of Kennebunkport Maine passed away peacefully at Southern Maine Medical Center on March 15, 2022. He was born in Medford Massachusetts on Sunday June 14, 1936, the son of the late Frederick Earnest Whelpley and Helen Charlotte (Moses) Whelpley.
Pete joined the Navy after completing High School and was a Radio Communications Specialist on several ships. He married Carolyn H. Melideo after being discharged from his military service, and they were married for 54 years.
Pete was an avid Ham radio operator with the call sign W1VZR. A hearty “73” to all the Hams!
Peter worked for many years as an electrical service engineer maintaining medical diagnostic equipment. He was an electronics wiz and was always sketching a schematic to fix something. Later in life he repaired VCRs, TVs, microwave ovens, and many other things with circuits. He even created and sold a “cake pan” ham radio for beginners.
Peter leaves behind his surviving sons and daughters; Stephen Peter Whelpley and his wife Tricia, Cynthia Mary (Whelpley) Macy and her husband Dale, Susan Elizabeth (Whelpley) Fulone and her husband Paul, and Douglas James Whelpley and his wife Cindy. He is also survived by his sister Gail Charlotte (Whelpley) Brochu, fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Carolyn in 2016, his brothers Frederick David Whelpley in 1954, and Paul Whitney Whelpley in 2012, and by his daughter Johanne (Whelpley) Steltzer in 2014.
Peter loved his dog Pheobe and his cat Ace. They were his home companions and they kept him active. They are in good care now with his grandsons.
Most importantly, Peter was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and asked Him to be both his Lord and Savior. Near the end of his life, Peter was continually praising the Lord and sharing his belief in the gospel of grace. He was not hesitant to praise and thank Him even while he was in pain. Peter believed that death was not the end, but the beginning of a new life in heaven with the Lord Jesus!
On Carolyn’s gravestone is the verse John 14:6 which Peter requested. It reads: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”” Amen.
