John S. Hughes

HUGHES, John S. Age 92 of Pembroke, formerly of Hyde Park and Roslindale, died peacefully at home on May 11, 2021 in the company of his family. Born in 1928 in Boston, son of Marguerite and Frank Hughes and dear brother of the late Marguerite (Hughes) Moulin of Hyde Park, the late Nancy (Hughes) Hannon of Hyde Park, the late James Hughes of Dedham, Vincent Hughes of Tennessee, and the late Christopher Hughes of Hyde Park. John graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Education from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1950. He served as a medic in the US Army in Germany before returning to Massachusetts and earning a Master’s Degree in Education from State Teachers College in 1955. For over 39 years, John taught and was later an assistant principal at various public schools in Boston including Warren Prescott School, Charles Bulfinch School, Maurice Tobin School, Randall Morris School, and William Taft School. He was also an active member of the St. John Chrysostom Parish in West Roxbury for many years. He retired from teaching in 1989 and moved to Pembroke a few years later to pursue his hobbies of woodworking and critiquing Boston sports teams. The beloved husband of Audrey (Brady) Hughes and the late Maureen (Tobin) Hughes. John is survived by his six children: John Hughes of Texas, Joanne Empoliti of Pembroke, Martha Hughes of Texas, Julie Alizio of Berkley, Mary Lukason of Hopkinton, and Gregory Hughes of Maine; 14 grandchildren: Maureen, Joanna, Kevin, Brian, Joseph, Shelby, Ryan, Hayden, Kanet, Dan, Sam, Kelly, Katie, and Charlie; and eight great-grandchildren: Cassius, James, Liam, Eleanor, Wilder, Kade, Karson, and Kinslee. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Friday, May 14th at St. John Chrysostom Church, 4740 Washington St. West Roxbury, MA at 10am followed by interment with military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery, 990 Lagrange St. West Roxbury.
