Joseph F. Guy Jr. 79, passed away in his adopted state of NC on February 28, 2021 following a short illness. Joe was born in Salem MA on November 6,1941 and attended Salem Public Schools. He retired from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department as a correctional officer with the rank of Captain.
Joe was an avid sports fan. In 1961 he founded the Eagles Recreational Baseball Team in Salem MA. Joe coached four years, winning the city championship in 1963 with the help of parents and his fellow coaches. He also coached youth baseball in Peabody for two years. He was proud of the athleticism and joy he could spread to those in the community through organized sports.Joe always remained a hardcore New England sports fan, who loved showing off his passion for the Patriots.
In 1988 Joe married his best friend and partner in life, Sally Guy. From that day forward they have shared a bond that is rarely seen between two people, always beside each other, always taking care of each other, always loving each other.
Joe and Sally loved horseback riding and camping.They especially loved camping at Old Coast Guard Station in Salem during 4th of July celebrations. When Sally retired they bought a motorhome and toured the country together for almost three years, seeing 45 states, before finally settling in Calabash, NC.They would still visit Salem once a year during July to see friends and family, and even took a trip to Alaska.
Joe was proud to belong to several social clubs; he was a lifetime member of The Elks, having been a member of the 1409 Peabody/Lynn MA chapter for 56 years, The Christopher Columbus Society of Salem, The Moose Lodge of Salem, The VFW Men’s Auxiliary post 72288 in Calabash NC and Sons of the Legion Post 503 in Calabash NC.
Joe loved being around people; he was a master storyteller who could engage an entire room with his charm and charisma. He will bemissed greatly by each life he touched.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents Louise M. Viselli Guy and Joseph F. Guy Sr., as well as, his brother-in-law Joseph Mento, husband to his sister Nancy, and great granddaughter Caroline Nelson. Surviving him is his beloved wife of over thirty years Sally Mason Guy. He also leaves behind his six children, Deborah L. LaJoie and husband Jerry LaJoie of North Reading MA, Joseph F. Guy III of Salem MA, Christina M. Guy of CA, Linda J. Raymond of Salem MA, David A. Guy and wife Jessica Eveleth of Salem MA, and Elizabeth K. Guy of Hamilton MA. He also leaves ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his beloved sister Nancy E. Mento.
A private memorial for his family will be held later this spring.
