Gena was born August 7,1931 in Belfast Me to the late Oscar and Caroline Patterson and an 11th generation direct descendant of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower Before moving to Norton she lived in Canton since 1941 graduating from Canton High Class of 1949 and raised her family. In her early years she worked as a secretary for the YMCA of Boston and attended the Henry O’Peabody School of Nursing earning her nursing degree. Following her retirement from the Hospital she worked as a temp nurse in many area nursing homes and provided physicals for various Life Insurance Companies. Her last employment was with the State where she works as a nurse in group homes in the Canton and Needham area.
One of her many passions where yard saling on weekends with her friend Elinor Pfeil. She would enjoy buying fancy clothes and costume jewelry for her granddaughters so they could play dress up. She would look for different items to purchase , put them on E-Bay and enjoy watching the bidding start. It was this time with friends, being outdoors, sharing stories, discussing Boston Globe articles they read and anticipating the annual Brimfield Fair where she would find her most sought out items, vintage postcards of Canton and Belfast Maine. She would share her finds with Dan Keleher a columnist who wrote Historical columns for the local newspaper and he would often use them in his articles
She was an avid reader loved traveling with her friends and planting flowers, she would spend hours sitting out admiring their beauty and enjoying the birds. She enjoyed knitting sewing and crocheting and quilting and would always be making gifts for family and friends. She was a member of the Not Just Knitting group of Norton which donated many of their items to local charities, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Sturdy Memorial Hospital, the Norton Senior Center and a supporter of The Nature Conservatory, Disabled Veterans of America, the Salvation Army, The American Heart Assoc, NRAL and the Home for Little Wanderers.
A light has gone out, a kind and thoughtful person no longer graces us here on earth but will lovingly live on in the hearts of all that were fortunate enough to know her.
A Heartfelt thanks to her wonderful friends the Not Just Knitting Group, Mal Belanger, Joan Lavangie, Kathy Keany, Dotty Norris, Kevin Murphy, all the angels at the Hulitar Hospice Center, Caroline Cora nurse extraordinaire at the former Wingate of Norton and the CNA’s Demare, Marie, Steven,Kim and EZ .
