Michael D. Merchant, age 43 of Branford, CT, formerly of Canton passed away September 15th. Born in Somerville, he was raised in Canton and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School. Michael was a skilled athlete and was Captain of the Hockey and Soccer Teams at Xaverian and he went on to play Junior Hockey after graduation. After a year of Junior Hockey he attended North Adams College where he played on the hockey team and later attended UMass, Boston. Michael worked for many years as a Union Mason and Bricklayer.
Beloved son of Mary C. (Sullivan) & John E. Merchant of Canton and Falmouth. Brother of Melissa Kirk and her husband Peter of Canton and Brendan Merchant and his wife Lindsey of Canton. Uncle of Abigail and Rebecca Kirk and Sydney, Lucy, and Catherine Merchant. Grandson of the late Leonard and Bernadette Merchant and Leo and Marie Sullivan. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Thursday morning at 10:30. Burial private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Virginia C.
