Obituary

Edward B. Loughlin, 96, of Fairhaven died on August 16, 2018 at Sippican Healthcare Center. He was the husband of the late Ruth B. (Bishop) Loughlin.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late John J. and Mary A. (Galvin) Loughlin, he lived in Fairhaven for most of his life.
Eddie was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. A graduate of Holy Family High School, Eddie proudly served in the Navy during World War II aboard the destroyer, USS Tillman DD-641, as a Torpedoman Second Class.
He was formerly employed by Verizon as a repair/PBX man. Eddie was a devout Catholic, a former member of the St. Joseph’s Couples Club and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Eddie was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time with his family. He and his wife, Ruth, had a core group of friends, often referred to as “The Gang.” This “Gang” celebrated the highs of their lives and supported each others’ lows. Their lives were an example to all of their children. Eddie bowled for years at the Bowl-a-more in Mattapoisett on Thursday nights. The Cathay Temple was one of his favorite spots. Eddie had a gift for making friends. Young or old he had a genuine interest in people and he valued these friendships that spanned generations. He loved to fish on the Cape Cod Canal. He enjoyed his skiing days in the North Conway area with the Cleary/Tillet families. He was a member of the Reservation Golf Club and spent many memorable days on the links. He scored a Hole In One there in 1992 and was honored with an Honorary Membership to the Reservation in November of 2017. He also enjoyed playing in many a Four Ball at the New Bedford Country Club. After golfing, Eddie and his many friends, lunched at Mike’s Restaurant. Eddie had lifelong friendships, true friends who knew the punch lines to each other’s jokes and could finish each other’s sentences.
Eddie is survived by his daughters, Christine Lodge and Maureen Gonzaga, two sons, Michael and David Loughlin, all of Fairhaven. His grandchildren include Andrew Lodge and his wife Sarah Strassburger, of Aspen, Co., Meredith Smith and her husband, Justin, of Granby, Ma., Jillian Grace and Jason Perry, Lauren Gonzaga and Jason Lefevre Jr., all of New Bedford, Seamus Grace and his wife, Jayne, of Boston, Ma., Chelsea Loughlin and Brian Loughlin of North Attleboro, Aaron Lobo and Peter Lobo of Fairhaven and Zacharri Lobo of New York, N.Y., as well as seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
