Frederick W. Mahar, age 74, passed away on Aug. 7, 2018 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 27, 1943 in Springfield, MA, a son of the late Edward and Pearl (Sherman) Mahar. Frederick was a US Navy veteran who served on the USS Independence during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later worked for the United States Postal Service for many years before he retired. He is predeceased by his first wife Rena (Garczynski) Mahar. He is survived by his 2 sons, Frederick W. Mahar Jr of Chicopee and Paul Mahar and his wife Brenda of Chicopee; 3 daughters, Missy Mahar of Westfield, Kim Ratelle of Chicopee and Roe Rattelle of Holyoke; 3 brothers, Richard Mahar of West Springfield, Gary Mahar and his wife Gail of Springfield and David Mahar of Chicopee; 1 sister Kathy Baurer and her husband Chris of Las Vegas; his 6 beloved grandchildren and his former wife Laurie (Bernier) Mahar of South Hadley. He is predeceased by his daughter Carol Haseltine. Calling hours will be held on the morning of the funeral at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee on Tuesday, Aug.14, 2018 from 10 – 11:30 AM.
