New Bedford – Edwin J. Makara, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Edwin was married to Otilia (Alves) Makara for 64 years. He was the son of the late Anna B. (Pietryka) Makara and John Makara.
Edwin retired after 33 years with Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co. and was a former member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, L.U.T.C. He was a 1948 graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School and served 8 years with the U.S. Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant. Edwin was a member of the New Bedford Yacht Club for 50 years. He sailed, cruised and fished Buzzards Bay since he was 13 years old. Edwin enjoyed time in Menemsha and Cuttyhunk with his family.
He leaves his wife; his daughter, Susan G. Stranz and her husband Michael; two grandchildren, Ryan Stranz and Dana Stranz; a sister, Winifred B. Hartley and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Michael D. Makara.
Family and friends are invited to attend his graveside services at the South Dartmouth Cemetery on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 10 A.M. Those attending are asked to meet at the funeral home between 9-9:30 A.M.
