NASHUA, NH: Elizabeth E. “Betty” (Wood) Baker, 92, an accomplished Artist and Designer, passed away peacefully in Bedford, New Hampshire on Sunday, February 25, 2018.
She was born in Lexington, MA on January 19, 1926 the daughter of the late Ronald H. Wood and Mildred F. (Mandigo) Wood.
She lived in Lincoln until she was ten years old and then moved to Cochituate and graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1943, where she met her neighbor and future husband Donald H. Baker who died in January of 2003.
She is survived by her sons Gene Baker and his wife Linda Baker of MA; Chris “Moose” Baker and his wife Lisa Baker of NH; Glen Baker and his wife Karen Baker of NH and her daughter Kathy Ellen Baker of NH. She was also the mother of the late Linda Allison Baker. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 1 step-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Sister of the late Paul, Ronald and Kenneth Wood.
Betty had a love of art and attended Vespa George School of Art in Boston. She worked her way through school as a lifeguard and swim instructor on Dudley Pond in Cochituate. She graduated from Vespa George with the Class of 1945. In 1947 Betty married the love of her life, Don Baker and together they built a house in Saxonville and raised their five children. She was a Girl Scout leader and a fabulous seamstress. During those years she and Don built a cottage on an island in Locke Mills, Maine. Her brothers and their families followed and there began many years of summers spent together in Maine.
Betty worked as a decorator and designer for Paine furniture and the Cabot House and then eventually started her own interior design business for several decades.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Saxonville and for many years with the Community United Methodist Church in Cochituate, where she was active in the church community.
In 1968, she and Don moved to the “country” in Dixmont, Maine where together they built another home. Betty worked as a freelance artist for the University of Maine and a decorator for the Friedman Furniture Co, in Bangor, Maine. After residing there for 7 years, she and Don moved to Hopkinton, MA. When Don’s health began to decline in the late 1990’s, they moved once again back to Maine and settled in Wells to be near the ocean. Betty retired at the age of 70 and later moved to New Hampshire to be closer to her family. Betty was an advocate for equal rights for women and led a full and caring life for all her family and friends. Betty was known for acknowledging every birthday and anniversary.
Memorial Visitations will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Community United Methodist Church, 5 Damon Street (corner of Rte. 27 and Damon St.), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
Private family interment will be with her husband Don in the Baker family lot in Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.
