Obituary

Dorothy V. (Nicholas) Grimes, 95, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, February 7th with her loving family by her side. Her husband of 63 years, Joseph A. Grimes died in 2003. She is survived by two sons, Joseph P. Grimes of Worcester and David B. Grimes and his wife, Peg of Greenfield; five daughters, Maureen V. Macklin and her husband, Craig of Worcester, Sheila F. Hawley of Torrington, CT, Kathleen Barber of Worcester, Elizabeth E. Lemire of Chestnut Ridge, NY and Taryn G. Herbert and her husband, Sean of Port Chester, NY; her sister, Georgianna Favreau of Baldwinville; thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her brother, Bryan Nicholas, Jr. and her sister, Evelyn Bastille. 

She was born in Falmouth, the daughter of Bryan and Emma (Irons) Nicholas. In her early years she was a Country and Western singer touring as, Nicky the Smiling Cowgirl, at which time she caught the eye of her future husband Joseph and they married in 1940. When not busy doting on her children and many grandchildren, she enjoyed nature walks, crafts, knitting, painting, writing, and quilting. In 2014 Dorothy published "A Walk with My Dad", a book of her poetry; and celebrated her 90th birthday by presenting lap quilts for her many descendants. 

The family extends their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff of Salmon VNA and Hospice for their dedicated support during a difficult time.

Her funeral is Saturday, February 17th, with a service at 2:00 p.m. in O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. A visitation period will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
