Robert F. Mackey, 91 of Salem, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday morning, November 25, 2017. He was the devoted husband of the late Alice S. (Prybyszewski) Mackey with whom he had shared 38 years of marriage.

Born and raised in East Boston and summering at Silver Lake in Tewksbury, he was the son of the late Richard and Elizabeth (Meaney) Mackey. Bob was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner on the air craft carrier USS Ticonderoga in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign. Following his tour of duty, he became a firefighter for the City of Boston, first at Engine 3 in the South End and later for Rescue I in the financial district. He was proud of his 45 years as a Boston Firefighter and was always willing to teach the younger firefighters the ropes.

Bob’s most pleasant times were spent with his family in New Hampshire, on the New Jersey shore and at Winter Island in Salem.

He is survived by his son, Robert F. Mackey, MD and his wife Florence of New Jersey, two daughters, Janie Mackey of Salem, Diane A. Hogan and her husband Rick of Marblehead, his grandchildren Doctors Justin & Jacqueline Mackey, Alexis McGregor & husband Colin all of Pennsylvania, Shane, Shamus and Shea Hogan all of Marblehead, great-grandchildren, Christian, Nate & Henry Mackey, Liam & Connor McGregor all of Pennsylvania. He also leaves a brother, Bill Mackey and his wife Betty of Dracut, a sister, Margie Di Manno of South Boston as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Rita Joyce, Betty Layne, Madeleine O’Keefe & Lorraine Fournier, and brothers, Tom & Dick Mackey.

Relatives and friends are invited to his calling hours on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Route 114 / 1-A] Salem. His funeral will be on Thursday, November 30th at 9:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem, to be followed by burial with Military Honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
