Obituary

Karen Mary McCarthy, 69, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 8, 2016 at UMass Memorial Medical Center. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary (Flynn) and Richard McCarthy of Westborough. Karen is survived by her brothers Richard J. McCarthy and his wife Lisa McCarthy of Leicester, Michael T. McCarthy and Renee McCarthy of Chandler, Arizona. Karen is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews Ryan, Meghan, Alec, Zach, and Amelia.

Karen was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts in 1946. She graduated from Walter Johnson High School, in Kensington, Maryland, in 1964. She then graduated from Lawrence Memorial Nursing School in Medford, Massachusetts in 1968, becoming a registered nurse. Over the years, Karen worked in many of the hospitals and surgical departments in central Massachusetts, including UMass and Memorial Hospitals, and most recently Milford Regional Medical Center until her early retirement in 2000 due to illness.

In her free time, Karen was a traveler – she was at her happiest when she was sailing off to warmer climes on one of the many cruises she embarked upon. Additionally, Karen was a huge fan of the New England Patriots, and faithfully watched every game – win or lose. In her later years, Karen took up painting, and would gift family members and friends with her works of art, those works often reflecting the subject she loved most – the ocean.

Services for Karen will be private. Donations in Karen’s memory may be made to: The Odd Fellows Home, 104 Randolph Road, Worcester MA, 01606. According to her wishes and to honor her dedication to medicine and science, Karen donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the UMass Medical School.
