Obituary

Barrett, Peter J. M.D., age 72, of Hingham, Nantucket, and North Palm Beach, died Friday, May 1, 2015. Dr. Barrett was born October 15, 1942, in Haverhill, MA, to Robert F. and Mildred W. Barrett. He attended St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, and received a B.A. in 1964 from The College of the Holy Cross, where he was a varsity football player. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University in 1968, and went on to a residency in radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Barrett served in the United States Navy Reserve, from which he was honorably discharged with the rank of Commander. On June 26, 1965, he married Clara Hayes, to whom he remained married for 48 years until her passing in 2013 from ALS. Dr. Barrett practiced radiology at Quincy Hospital, and later was a clinical professor of radiology at New England Medical Center and the Tufts University School of Medicine. He also founded a successful medical business that worked nationally evaluating cases of respiratory disease for the United States government and private clients. An avid golfer and sailor, he was a member of Sankaty Head Golf Club, Hingham Yacht Club, Nantucket Yacht Club, The Lost Tree Club, and The Oyster Harbors Club. In addition to helping found The Sister Claire Memorial Fund, Dr. Barrett also did a great deal of charitable work, donating his time and resources to Holy Cross, St. John's Preparatory School, Milton Academy, The Catholic Schools Foundation, The ALS Association, and The Boys' and Girls' Club of Nantucket.

Dr. Barrett is survived by his son Peter Jr. and his wife Jenny, of Hingham, and his son Jonathan, of Boston. He also leaves behind Peter and Jenny’s three children Samuel, Georgia, and Peter III, and Jonathan's three children Finian, Graeme, and Jonathan Jr. He is also survived by his sister and brother in law, Patricia and Bruce Pettengill, of East Kingston, NH.

Funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham, Thursday May 7 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Paul Church, 147 North St. Hingham, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours on Wednesday May 6, from 4-8 p.m. Interment in St. Paul Cemetery, Hingham. A celebration of Dr. Barrett's life for family and friends will follow at 1 Bare Cove Lane, Hingham.
