WAYLAND: Fritz Veit Wald, 81, died peacefully and comfortably on December 23, 2014. He was the loving husband for 55 years of Doris Herberg Wald, of Wayland. Fritz was born in Dieringhausen, Germany in 1933 to Eugen and Elli Wald. Fritz was an award-winning chemist who dedicated much of his career to developing sustainable energy in the field of photovoltaics, and he held several patents related to the development of solar cells. Fritz was an active and devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wayland.
Fritz enjoyed photography, dissecting history, and writing poetry. An avid philatelist, Fritz had his collections on public display over the years as well as publications about collecting stamps and documents from the Alsace-Lorraine region of Germany. Later in life, he took great joy in visiting with and caring for his grandchildren. His endless patience and undivided attention ensured lasting memories for them and the entire family.
In addition to his wife, Doris Herberg Wald of Wayland, Fritz was the beloved father of Kristin Wald (Peter Simon) of Montclair, NJ, Andrea McDonald (Rob McDonald) of Wayland, and Katja Wald of Jamaica Plain. He was the cherished Opa of Beckett and Eliza Simon, and Juliana and Colby McDonald. Fritz is also survived by his brother Dieter Wald of Dieringhausen, Germany and his family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church, 107 Concord Road, in Wayland. A private interment ceremony will be held for family.
