Esther P. ( Porter) Maker- Sterling of Charlton, formerly of Stoughton and Webster, on Friday July 13, 2013. Age 84 years. Beloved wife of the late John C. Maker, Earl Sterling and mother to the late Kathleen C. Maker. She is survived by her daughters, Charlene V. Maker and her husband Andreas M. Koehler of Little Compton, Rhode Island, Janice Gay Maker and her husband Christopher J. Gay of Norfolk, Virginia, her six grandchildren, Fayne J. Maker, Wesley B. Maker – Fonseca, Sarah P. Maker, Rebecca C. Maker, Kelsey E. Healey-Maker, Nicholas W. Gay, 3 Great-Grandchildren, her sister Alta Pettengill and husband George Pettengill, her son-in-law John Healey of Webster,MA and several nieces and nephews.
Born September 1, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts Esther was the loving daughter to the late Winston Churchill Porter and Glady’s (Payson) Porter. She attended Milton Public Schools and was a 1947 graduate of Milton High School. Esther was a self-employed musician all of her life. She played at several area churches which included The Parkway Methodist Church in Milton, The Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton and The First United Methodist Church also in Stoughton. While attending Boston University, she had the distinct pleasure of studying piano under the direction of late Helen Lovejoy and Maude Downs.
Mrs. Maker- Sterling was also a member of the Stoughton Choral Society and member of the Order Of The Eastern Star. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing. Her family and her long musical career playing the piano were her greatest joys in life. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday September 21, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in The Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. The Rev. Gary F. Mettleton officiating. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. All are welcome to attend. Burial will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers,donations to The Old Stoughton Musical Society, C/O The Stoughton Historical Society, 6 Park Street, Stoughton, MA 02072 in Esther’s memory, would be appreciated.
