Obituary

Herbert Sidney Maxwell, 83, of Franklin, Massachusetts, died January 9 surrounded by family and friends. He was born October 5, 1929 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the son of the late Mabel Davis and Albert Sidney Maxwell. He was the oldest of four siblings. In 1941 the Maxwell family moved back to the U.S. Sidney soon followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from Presbyterian College Summa Cum Laude and then from Columbia Seminary. He served as a pastor in Manchester, GA and Tryon, NC. In 1957 he married Margaret Maxwell of Charlotte, North Carolina. He then graduated from Boston University with a Ph.D. in Psychology and Religion and served the community as a psychologist from 1975-2012. He was an active member of two churches, was a woodworker, potter, painter, and gardener. He is survived by his siblings Jean McCarter of Oakland, California and Jack Maxwell, of Charleston, West Virginia. He is also survived by his wife, Margaret and his children John Maxwell of Providence, Rhode Island, Susan Maxwell of Oakland, California, Carol Maxwell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Marie and her husband Brian Gunning of Norfolk. He is also survived by his grandchildren Nolan and Luke Gunning and Stephanie and Alicia Maxwell He was preceded in death by his brother David Maxwell. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5-8 at the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin (www.ginleyfuneral homes.com) 131 Main Street Franklin and a funeral service will be held Tuesday 11: am at Franklin Federated Church, Franklin, Ma. Interment will be in Union Street Cemetery, Franklin.
