Obituary

Jerome E. “Jerry” Mitchell, age 67, passed away on Dec. 23, 2012 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born on Feb. 21, 1945 in Springfield. He was a son of the late James and M. Esther (Haggerty) Mitchell. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School, Class of 1962. Jerry was the former owner of Mitchell Bus Company in Chicopee and worked for many years in the freight transportation business as a sales representative. He worked as a supervisor for Chopper Logistics before he retired. He previously served with the Air National Guard in Westfield, MA. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council #69 in Chicopee and also a former member of the Tigers Athletic Club. Jerry had a passion for life, his family, his many friends and for the game of Golf. He loved to spend Sundays at his youngest son’s house watching sporting events with his sons and their friends. He leaves his loving wife Patricia (Dupont) Mitchell of Chicopee; 3 sons, David Dumont of Port St Lucie, FL, Michael Mitchell of Chicopee and Matthew Mitchell and his fiancé Ashley Abbott of Chicopee; 3 daughters, Donna Feely and her husband Tom of Fort Mill, SC, Moira Ploof and her husband Tracy of Westfield and Kara Gauthier and her husband Paul of Chicopee; 1 twin brother James Mitchell of Feeding Hills; 1 sister, Mary Kempf of Southbury, CT; 10 grandchildren, Isaac Webb and his wife Erica, David Dumont, Zackery Mitchell, Thomas Feely, Ryan Feely, Evan Ploof, Meredith Ploof, Kate Gauthier, Daniel Gauthier and Brianna Dumont. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Jerry’s final act was to give the gift of life through tissue donation. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow in St Patrick’s Cemetery.
