Athanasia V. "Foula" (Dakis) McGough

WINDSOR, CT – Athanasia V. “Foula” (Dakis) McGough, 72, of Windsor, Connecticut was Called Safely Home on Friday, October 19, 2012. She was born in Albany, New York on July 26, 1940 a beloved daughter of the late William A. and Christine (Kerry) Dakis. She was raised and attended local schools in Springfield and lived in the city for many years. She later lived in Longmeadow before moving to Windsor, Connecticut in 1990. She furthered her education and received a bachelor’s degree from Western New England College in Springfield. She was a teacher for many years and Chairwoman of the Business Department at Cathedral High School in Springfield before retiring around 1993. Active in her faith, she was a faithful communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. She was a longtime director of the Sunday school at the Cathedral and a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her dear brother, George Dakis. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, Thomas C. McGough, Jr. They were married on April 15, 1963 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and were blessed with over 49 years of happiness together. She also leaves her loving son, Michael T. McGough and his wife, Andrea, of New York, NY; her daughter, Christine A. Gariepy and her husband, Paul, of Whiting, Vermont; her granddaughter, Alexia Parks; her great-granddaughter, Sarah Ann Parks; her caring sister, Maria Carellas and her husband, Theodore, of Westfield; and her dear nephews and nieces. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, October 24, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. in Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. Her burial will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund, 22 Saint George Road, Springfield, MA 01104 or to Autism Speaks New England Chapter, 85 School Street, Suite 100, Watertown, MA 02472.
