Obituary

Atty. Edward J. Harrington, Jr., in his 80th year, of Dartmouth, died April 24, 2004 at home after a long courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

He was the husband of Mary Agnes (Ellison) Harrington and the late Mary Madeleine (Faucher) Harrington,

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Edward J. and Esther F. (Yates) Harrington, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Dartmouth in 1971. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, the College of the Holy Cross, and Catholic University Law School where he received his Juris Doctoris.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church in Dartmouth and a member of Bishop Gerard Council of St. Vincent dePaul Society. In 1974, he was awarded the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River.

Atty. Harrington maintained a private law practice in New Bedford for over 40 years, and was a founder of the Public Defender's Office for Bristol, Dukes and Nantucket Counties.

Atty. Harrington served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post One, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Bristol County Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and a member and past president of the New Bedford Bar Association. He was a former member and president of the New Bedford Protecting Society. He was an original trustee of Southeastern Massachusetts University, now University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Commander Edward J. Harrington. U.S.N., of California; 2 daughters, Patricia Harrington Dolan of Naples, FL and Margaret Harrington O'Brien of Raynham; a brother, Rev. Msgr. Thomas J. Harrington, Pastor of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Mary Cain of Melrose, Ann Callanan of South Dartmouth and Esther Gillis of Texas; 6 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordWednesday, April 28th at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church, Dartmouth at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Tuesday, April 27th from 4-8 PM.

Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
