
Martha Anne (Bennett) Headley, age 84, of Windham and Alton, NH , died peacefully on Friday March 23, 2012 at Windham Terrace in Windham, surrounded by family. Raised in Belmont MA and Middletown, CT, Martha was a proud alumnus of Colby College class of ‘49 and taught HS English in Pittsfield NH prior to her marriage to Richard F. Headley of Wolfeboro, NH in June 1950. She raised 4 boys as work brought the family from Rochester, NY, to Findlay, OH and Acton, MA. She was active in Acton Little Theatre, community affairs, the Baptist Church and Mohegan Maids; she was a devoted mother. Since the mid 1960’s summers have been spent in Alton, managing the cottages at Fernhill Beach – a legacy of her father and mother, Gordon and Pauline Bennett. Many have fond memories of summer vacations spent with the Bennett and Headley families there. An active member of the Alton community since ‘72, she joined the Alton Community Church, the Garden Club and was a trustee of the Gilman library, rising to become a NH State Library Trustee. Martha and Richard also owned Lake and Stream Realty for many years.
Survived by her sons: Robert B. Headley of Yorktown Heights, NY and Gordon T. Headley and his wife, Cindy of Londonderry, NH, daughter-in-law, Mary Bopp Headley (widow of Charles) of Wappinger Falls, NY. 8 Grandchildren: Andrea Rai, Kristen MacCulloch, Robert, Ryan, Daniel, Brian, Martin and Peter Headley; 2 Great-Grandchildren, Carson Rai and Bennett MacCulloch. Martha was pre-deceased by her husband, Richard in 2001 and her children, Charles R. Headley in 2011, Bruce F. Headley in 1972 and daughter-in-law Shauna McGregor Headley in 2009.
There are no calling hours. Following cremation, a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 1:00PM at Alton Community Church, Main Street, Alton NH. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alton Community Church.
