Obituary

Mary Ellen Case, 94, of Ventura, California passed away on August 2, 2026 at 8pm in Ventura, California.



Mary Ellen Shippee was born on January 13, 1932 to Rose Bethona Shippee (Hawks) and Howard George Shippee. She was an only child.. She was an only child. She loved kites. As a child, she would sit on her roof and untangle kite string, as an adult, she would gather the Family for kite flying at Marina Park on special occasions. She received her high school diploma from Saint Catherines by the Sea in 1950. Later in life, she studied early computer code and library science at Ventura Community College. She worked as a bookkeeper throughout her life.



She loved roller-skating, playing cards, bingo, scrabble, latch hook projects and puzzles. She remained active throughout her life. She gathered her close family for daily walks in her neighborhood, and on Sunday at Marina Park. Later in life, she studied early computer code and library science at Ventura Community College. She worked in the library part-time. Her grandchildren recall a love for books and libraries that she passed on to them. She preferred fog, but on a clear day, you could see the hole in the rock at Anacapa Island from her living room. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. Many of her family members cherish the sweaters and rugs that she made throughout the years. She was an avid reader, with a book in progress at all times. Mary did much traveling throughout the world with her daughter Lili.



Mary is survived by children Christina Gray, Lili Vance and Michael Case. Grand children from Christina are Anika, Alyssa, Nicholle, and Caleb and from Michael are Sydney, Laurence and Adan. Great-grandchildren from Anika are Shae, Salem and Eden, from Alyssa are Eli and William, from Nicholle are Thomas and Grace and from Caleb are Jessi and Angus.



Mary was predeceased by her husband Daryl Case, sons Larry Case and Fred Vance.

A special thanks to Kathy and Cindy Collins for all of their kindness and good care, and to Livingston Memorial Hospice.

A Memorial Service will be held on August 16 at 1pm at Reardon Funeral home, 757 East Main Street, Ventura, Ca. All friends are welcome.
