Obituary

Douglas William Bill of Hyannis, MA, passed away on July 1, 2026 in North Reading, MA. Born in Boston on October 23, 1947, Doug lived a life marked by dedication to his family, community, and work. Doug attended Mount Saint Charles Academy and Dennis-Yarmouth High School, and excelled in most sports. Growing up on Hyannis Harbor, you could find him sailing, working for Hy-Line Cruises, and making the most daring swims across the ferry channel.

Doug enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1969, and was shortly thereafter deployed to serve in the Vietnam War, ultimately promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Doug often spoke of the challenges of managing massive loads of artillery, attaching these by hand to Chinook helicopters for transport. Doug was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces, and his citation from the President notes that his “loyalty, diligence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.”

Upon returning, Doug married Jane Hattemer and had two children, Elinor and Christopher: the two great joys of his life. He started and ran his own business as a general contractor, and his talent and hard work can still be seen in homes all across Cape Cod. Doug took great pride in his work, and always went out of his way to help friends and neighbors with projects. Affectionately known as an obligate tinkerer and "Mr. Fix-It", he always had the right tool–and skill– for the job.

After running a successful building company, Doug went back to school, graduating with a degree in Geology from Bridgewater State College. He co-founded Mahoney & Douglas, an environmental services company which improved soil and groundwater conditions on Otis Air Force Base and areas across Cape Cod. He also disseminated this practical knowledge to many students, teaching Earth Science and Environmental Science for many years as an instructor at Cape Cod Community College.

Deeply involved in his community, Doug led the Glenmere Civic Association and served on the planning board and zoning board of appeals for the Town of Barnstable. Known for his sharp wit and determination, he was a regular viewer of the live-broadcast town meetings and never hesitated to hop in his truck and head over to Town Hall when he felt an important point needed to be made.

In his younger years, Doug was an excellent hockey player, competing all over Cape Cod and New England. In his mid-seventies, he was so thrilled when his youngest granddaughter learned to skate that he showed up at the rink, pulled on skates that hadn’t seen ice in decades, and gleefully skated circles around everyone. Doug never slowed down. In his later years, it was not uncommon to find him on top of a garage roof, trimming tree branches with a chainsaw, much to the consternation of his family and neighbors. Doug would roll his eyes and shake his head at the suggestion of doing it any other way. His humor and kind-hearted nature were constants throughout his life.

Doug was a devoted and supportive father. Whether he was cheering on the Barnstable High School and UMass Amherst music programs, driving a carload of rowdy teenage cronies to their next adventure, or spending countless hours rebuilding boats and cars, he gave his time, encouragement, and love without hesitation.

Doug is survived by his daughter Elinor Brown and her husband Aaron of Newburyport, son Christopher Bill and his wife Raissa of Scarsdale, NY, and his grandchildren Beatrix, Odysseus, and Ophelia. He also leaves behind his sister Pamela King, nephews Adam, Jonathan, and niece Kelsey. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Elinor Mitchell Bill and William Omer Bill, as well as by his sister Patricia Bill Methot.

A graveside memorial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Friday, July 17th at 9:30am with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project. Doug will be remembered for his humor, tenacity, and the love he shared with those around him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
