
MUMFORD COVE: Jerome Roland Belair III, lovingly known as Jerry, passed away peacefully on April 12 at the age of 73, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He left behind a legacy of dedication to family, education and the joys of life on the water.
Jerry shared 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Wendy - a partnership built on love, devotion and mutual support. Together they built a life centered on family and shared memories. He was a proud father to his son, Jason, and grandfather to Alexander. He is also survived by his dear brother, Gary and loving sisters, Caren Wolk and Teri O’Donnell, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A lifelong educator and respected leader, Jerry dedicated his career to shaping the lives of students and strengthening school communities across Connecticut. He served with distinction as a teacher, principal and superintendent in Waterford, Weston, Southington, East Lyme, Norwich and Groton.
Jerry served on numerous boards and committees, sharing his expertise and insight. He was a respected voice at professional gatherings where he spoke and mentored generations of educators, always advocating for excellence and innovation in schools. Jerry earned multiple degrees and certifications from Georgetown University, UC Berkeley, Southern CT State University and Harvard University.
His colleagues widely regarded him as the gold standard of educational leadership ~ and individual whose integrity, vision and commitment left a lasting impact on generations of students and educators.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jerry found great happiness in boating. Time spent on the water brought him peace and joy, especially when shared with family and friends.
Jerry left this thought; “I’ve had 73 years. I can’t think of one single bad one!”
Jerry’s loyal friendship and wise counsel were treasured by many, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jerry will be deeply missed by his family and countless friends and colleagues whose lives he touched.
There will be no services at this time. There will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Jerry’s honor to the American Cancer Society or ASCPA.
