Obituary

John Rakes, 77, of Holbrook, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026.

Born on July 17, 1948, in Boston, Massachusetts, John lived a life defined by service, devotion to family, and a remarkable gift for bringing people together.

At the age of 17, John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1965. He served honorably during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, along with numerous other commendations, in recognition of his courage and dedication. His military service remained a profound source of pride throughout his life. John’s legacy of service inspired younger generations, including his grandchildren, who often chose to write about him for school assignments. He was frequently invited to speak in classrooms, where he proudly shared his experiences and wisdom, leaving lasting impressions on students and teachers alike.

Family was the center of John’s world. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Anne Slicious Rakes. He was a devoted father to his four children: Sharon Santiago Rakes and her husband, Angelo; John Rakes; Michael Rakes and his wife, Gretchen; and Stephen Rakes and his wife, Terri.

John was a proud and loving Papa to David, Patrick, Caden, Dylan, and Jackson Rakes, and a cherished great-grandfather to Aurora and Declan Rakes.

He is also survived by his siblings, James Rakes, Joseph Rakes, and Patricia Rakes, as well as his sisters- and brothers-in-law Karen Rakes, Evelyn Slicious, Joseph Slicious, and Ronald Slicious. John leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

John was known for his warmth, generosity, and unforgettable hospitality. Whether sharing stories or making sure everyone had a drink in hand—often poured with what loved ones fondly called his “heavy hand”—he made every gathering memorable. He delighted in creating special moments for the children in his life, from snow cones and pool parties to thoughtful treats that brought endless smiles.

Cooking and entertaining were among John’s greatest joys. He loved hosting family and friends, ensuring that everyone felt welcomed and cared for. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox, and took pride in fixing and improving things around the house.

John was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Rakes and Alice Nancy Moore; his brothers, Robert and Stephen Rakes; and his sister, Mary O’Malley. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

As we remember John—a man who served his country with valor, loved his family deeply, and brought joy to all who knew him—we are reminded of the profound impact one life can have on so many. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Vietnam Veterans of America, or a charity of one’s choice.
