Obituary of James Damas, 7/3/1960 - 2/9/2026
James B. Damas came into the world wide-eyed and full of curiosity on July 3, 1960, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was always listening with his eyes—observing his surroundings and the people in them. As a Deaf man, he was naturally inquisitive, often wanting to understand the “why” and “how” of the world around him. He had a lifelong love of learning and discovery.
In 1976, James moved to the United States and fearlessly explored Boston, making it his new home. He attended Horace Mann School, where he continued to grow academically and socially. Above all, James was a man who cherished time with his family.
James was a hardworking provider whose work ethic was unparalleled. He approached life with confidence and determination, believing there was no problem he could not solve. Over the years, he owned and operated his own cleaning business, managed two buildings as a landlord, and even took on formidable tasks at home—like clearing 25-foot trees from his backyard. Whatever needed to be done, James did it with courage and pride.
A natural leader, James served as the proud leader of the Men’s Group at Walk in the Light Deaf Church in Malden, Massachusetts, Deaf Inc in Allston and Black Deaf Advocates-Boston Chapter. He had a gift for making people laugh while also uplifting them and encouraging confidence in themselves. Throughout his life, he lived in Chelsea, Allston, Brighton, and Waltham, before settling in Randolph, where he purchased his home and built a life he deeply valued.
With deep sadness, we share that James was suddenly taken from us while working to provide for his family—a reflection of the dedication that defined his life.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Damas; his four children, James Damas Jr., Jacinda Damas, Michael Damas, and Jasper Damas; and his cherished grandchildren, Jayson and Justin Damas.
He is also survived by his mother, Suzette Vernet, and his siblings, Edna D. Jacquet, Frico Damas, Leavens Damas, Nadeige Damas, Ernst Darius, Sherly Damas, Melissa Damas, and Vladimir Damas.
James was predeceased by his father, Francois Paul Damas, and his brother, Rulx “JoJo” Damas.
