Obituary

Cathy Louise Maynard Osborne, 73, passed away suddenly at home in Groton on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, having spent the day with her children and grandsons.
The youngest of five children of Walter and Dorothy Maynard, Cathy was born on October 26, 1952, in New London. She grew up in Noank and lived in several coastal New England towns, including New Haven, Branford, and Westerly, where she lovingly raised her children, Danielle and Torrey Osborne. Cathy was a devoted, doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother (Gigi), known for her warmth, compassion, and joy in nurturing those around her—including her beloved doggy grandchild, Harlow.
Following her career in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff in the New Haven Superior Courthouse and later as a security officer at Foxwoods, Cathy retired to South Carolina with her great love, Andy. There, she spent fifteen wonderful years enjoying trips to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and other coastal Carolina towns. Anyone who knew Cathy knew how deeply she loved the ocean, beaches, sunsets, and flowers. She had a gift for seeing beauty in the world and sharing it—often sending photos that captured what she saw through her eyes.
Cathy returned to Connecticut in 2023, treasuring time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandson. In 2024, she moved to Groton, reconnecting with former acquaintances and forming many new friendships.
Anyone who knew Cathy knew her heart was open and generous. Her happy disposition and gregarious personality enabled her to make friends wherever she went. She was thankful for friends who became like family in South Carolina—Sandy, Alan, Dylan, and Candy. No matter where she lived, Cathy made it clear that her teams included the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and New York Rangers.
Cathy was profoundly affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center and the ultimate sacrifice made by first responders. She made many trips to the site over the years to honor those who lost their lives. Her loving and caring spirit extended to everyone she encountered—family, friends, neighbors, and animals alike. She had a special tenderness for her doggy grandchild, Harlow, and for all those she loved and cared for throughout her life.
In addition to Danielle Osborne Tatta (Dana) and Torrey Osborne (Jill), Cathy is survived by her former husband, James Osborne of Groton; her siblings Linda Maynard Powell, Michele Maynard Miller, Walter W. Maynard, and Doreen J. Maynard; her biological child, Elisa McCabe; grandchildren Julia Ryan, Morgan Ryan, Derek Osborne, Ashley McCabe Levine, William (Billy) McCabe, Landon Tatta; and great-grandson Lucas Rice. Cathy was heartbroken by the untimely passing of her granddaughter, Marissa Osborne, last summer. She also leaves behind her dear friend, Bonnie Lee.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time. Donations in Cathy’s memory may be made to Serve and Connect (https://serveandconnect.org), where she volunteered her time to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Cathy will be remembered for her boundless love, her appreciation of life’s beauty, and the gentle compassion she extended to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
