Ricky "Rick" Otto Muir
April 1, 1949 – July 31, 2025
Rick was born on April 1st, 1949 and passed away surrounded by his beloved family on July 31st, 2025. Rick and his wife Peggy were lifelong residents of Anderson, Indiana where they built a beautiful family. Family was the center of Rick’s world. Rick was known and will be remembered as a beloved husband along with the best father, brother, papaw, great-papaw, teacher, coach and friend to everyone..
Rick graduated from Anderson High School with the Class of 1967, earned his Bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University in 1971 and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Education from Ball State University in 1975.
Rick was a lifelong advocate for public education and a dedicated public servant. Rick was known for his unwavering commitment to his students, his colleagues, and his community. A central figure in public education for nearly four decades, Rick devoted 37 years to teaching in Anderson Community Schools before retiring in 2010. He served as President as well as Chief Negotiator for Anderson Federation of Teachers Local 519 for 21 years, President of the American Federation of Teachers Indiana for 14 years and held leadership roles as Vice President and member of the Board of Directors for the Indiana AFL/CIO. Rick’s dedication to civic engagement also extended to public office where he served on the Anderson City Council for 20 years.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Leon Muir; sister, Debbie Reisinger; in-laws, Virginia and Lloyd O’Brien; niece and nephew Matthew and Danielle.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret “Peggy” Muir; his brother, Jeff (Kathy) Muir; his children, Brandon (Leslie) Muir and Marisa Muir; his cherished grandchildren: Erica (Todd) Morin, Olivia Muir, Mason Morin, Elijah Graham, and Emma Graham, and several nieces and nephews.
Rick's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the causes he championed and the family who loves him dearly.
Please join the family in celebrating the life of Rick Muir on August 17, 2025 from 1pm to 5pm at Edgewood Country Club in Anderson, Indiana. The family will be honoring Rick through shared stories, song and scripture throughout this time of celebration.
